ODOP ELURU
ONE DISTRICT ONE PRODUCT (ODOP)
One District One Product (ODOP) is an initiative by the Government of India with the goal of selecting, branding and promoting at least one product from each district in the country to facilitate comprehensive socioeconomic growth across all regions. The scheme adopts the ODOP approach to leverage the advantages of scale in terms of input procurement, access to common services, and product marketing.
The Hand Knotted Carpet Weaving has been selected for nomination of ODOP Awards from Eluru District. The practice of carpet making dates back centuries and originally began as a household activity. Over the years, the production and trade of carpets increased the commercial demand for carpets. The artisans of Tangellamudi and Lakshmivarapupet of Eluru Municipal Corporation have produced the Hand Knotted Carpets.Carpets are durable consumer products that can be defined as textile floor covering. They consist of an upper/visible layer known as pile and a secondary layer or backing that is attached to it. Synthetic fibres such as polypropylene, nylon or polyester, are widely used to make this pile. Carpets are available in a variety of shapes, sizes, patterns, textures, and materials.

Eluru District
Carpet weaving in India was brought from Persia during the Mughal rule and has been flourishing since the time of Akbar. Eluru in Andhra Pradesh adopted the craft from the artisans and craftsmen who migrated to the Deccan region. Cotton yarn and locally hand-spun wool are the main materials regularly used. For enhanced quality, the woolen yarn from Bikaner and Bhadohi of Rajasthan and UP are used.
The designs reflect the Persian origins, and are named after the patterns such as Mehboob Khani, Hasim Khani, etc. Natural shades of wool such as fawn gray, white and black are generally preferred as they don’t fade. The carpets are woven on vertical looms and mostly by the Muslim community.
Eluru carpets are also known as Deccan rugs as an acknowledgement of the patronage of Deccan rulers. However, despite its glorious past, the craft is slowly languishing and is practiced only at Thangellamudi of Eluru Municipal Corporation, Eluru District of Andhra Pradesh. The sizes vary from 3ft x 5ft, to 9ft x 12ft in vibrant colors and designs with geometric or floral patterns.
